Flat Feet / Fallen Arches

Fallen arches, or flat feet, is a condition in which the arch of the foot collapses, causing the whole foot to touch the ground when you stand. Although it can occur at any age, it is most common in children and adults over 40.

The flat foot causes your foot to turn outwards when you stand on it. This can put a strain on your ankles, knees, and hips, which can lead to pain in those joints.

There are two types of flat feet: flexible (which means the foot can still be moved into a normal position) and rigid (which means the foot cannot be moved into a normal position). If you have flexible flat feet, you’re likely to feel pain when walking or standing for long periods of time. You may also find it difficult to wear shoes that fit properly. Rigid flat feet can cause pain in the ankles and knees, and make it difficult to walk.

Fallen Arches Treatment

There are a number of treatment options available for flat feet, depending on the severity of the condition. If you have flexible flat feet, a simple over-the-counter arch support or insert can help to relieve the pain. If you have rigid flat feet, your GP may refer you to an orthopedic surgeon for treatment. Surgery is usually only recommended if other treatments haven’t worked and you’re in a lot of pain.
